Learn about the life cycle of butterflies in a fun and exciting way: Scavenger hunt!
We did this activity when we were still in Suriname. We noticed a lot of butterflies, caterpillars and cocoons around our backyard and Niko was really interested in them. I thought it would be a nice idea to do a scavenger hunt since he was already familiar with the butterfly’s life cycle.
During the scavenger hunt, we saw a lot of cocoons, three caterpillars and a few butterflies flying around. Unfortunately, we didn’t find any eggs.
It was fun teaching Niko about the life cycle of a butterfly in a toddler way.
We also carried around some binoculars and magnifying glass.
Aside from the scavenger hunt, I also set up a simple butterfly life cycle sensory tray for him.

Let’s set up a butterfly life cycle sensory tray:
Materials needed:
- Printer
- Scissors
- Magnifying glass
- Binoculars
- Round tray
For the colored rice:
- Food coloring; green
- 1 cup of rice
- 1/2 cup vinegar
- Container with lid or ziplock bag
- Paper towel
Instructions:
For the colored rice:
- Fill the ziplock with a cup of rice.
- Pour the vinegar.
- Pour a few drops of the food coloring.
- Close the ziplock.
- Mix and spread the food coloring with the rice.
- Add more drops until you reach your desired hue.
- Pour the colored rice evenly on the paper towel and let dry.
How to set up:
- Look for pictures of a butterfly, cocoon, caterpillar and eggs on the internet.
- Print and cut them.
- Fill the round tray with the colored rice.
- Arrange the photos on top of the rice.
